Biden Administration extends immigration relief to Afghans in the US
As of March 16th, the department of Homeland Security will allow Afghans in the United States to remain in the country under Temporary Protected Status. In order to be eligible for TPS, individuals must have continuously resided in the US as of March 15th. The TPS designation will be in place for 18 months and may apply to Afghans who were already in the US prior to the evacuation and the thousands brought to the US after the fall of Kabul.
Biden Administration extends relief to Ukrainians in the US
On March 3rd, the Department of Homeland Security announced the designation of Ukraine for Temporary Protected Status for 18 months. Individuals eligible for TPS under this designation must have continuously resided in the United States since March 1, 2022. Individuals who attempt to travel to the United States after March 1, 2022 will not be eligible for TPS. The Federal Register notice will provide instructions for applying for TPS and an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). TPS applicants must meet all eligibility requirements and undergo security and background checks.
Biden Administration will take in 100,000 Ukrainian refugees
The United States will admit up to 100,000 Ukrainian refugees and provide $1 billion in humanitarian assistance to countries affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Among the first Ukrainians refugee coming to the U.S. will be those who have family already in the United States. U.S. refugee efforts will also focus on helping refugees who are considered particularly vulnerable, including groups that include LGBTQ people, those with medical needs, and journalists and dissidents. All 100,000 individuals may not come this year alone.
