Re-designation of protections for Liberians

Official memorandum HERE

  1. Extends Deferred Enforcement of Departure (DED) for Liberians, which allows individuals from Liberia to remain in the United States without fear of deportation and to obtain a work authorization, to continue receiving these benefits past the previous January 10, 2021 deadline until June 30, 2022.

  2. Directs the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary to publish a notice in the Federal Register to immediately extend the validity of work authorization cards that otherwise expired on January 10, 2021 and to issue new or replacement cards when necessary.

  3. The directive applies to any Liberian who had recevied DED as of January 10, 2021. It does not apply to:

    1. Individuals who are not eligible for Temporary Protected Status.

    2. Individuals who were or are denied green cards under the Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness provisions.

    3. Individuals who the DHS Secretary determines should be removed from the United States.

    4. Individuals who the Secretary of State believes should not be in the United States.

    5. Individuals who have voluntarily returned to Liberia or another country of habitual residence for a total of over 6 months.

    6. Individuals subject to extradition.
