Gillian Rowland-Kain

Gillian is the proud granddaughter of Irish immigrants and has had a strong commitment to human rights and social justice, beginning her career over 10 years ago serving as an AmeriCorps volunteer at buildOn in the South Bronx. Gillian also served as an AmeriCorps member through Public Allies at the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) as a Membership and Communications Fellow; she was hired on as the Special Assistant and had the opportunity to support the NYIC with many important projects such as health access for immigrant New Yorkers, ensuring immigrant communities receive small business funding, language access campaigns, and a multitude of conferences and state-wide convenings.

Gillian returned to Public Allies New York as the Program Manager of Partner Recruitment where she worked closely with a number of nonprofits and government agencies. While attending law school, Gillian interned with Queens Legal Services as a New York Bar Foundation Catalyst Public Interest Fellow working in the Home Owner & Consumer Rights project and the New York State Division of Human Rights in the Division Initiated Action Unit.

Most recently, Gillian worked as a Student Attorney at CUNY’s Human Rights and Gender Justice Clinic where she drafted a policy paper for the Special Advisor on Gender Persecution for the International Criminal Court on gender persecution in Afghanistan. Gillian completed her Juris Doctor from City University of New York School of Law, her Master of Science in Human Rights and International Politics from the University of Glasgow in Scotland, and her Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Connecticut College.
